How can Australian businesses sponsor overseas workers?

Australia is one of the world’s leading destinations for international education, offering globally recognised institutions, high academic standards, and a safe, welcoming environment for students from around the world. For many students, studying in Australia is not only an academic opportunity but also an important step toward long-term career development in a global economy. Decisions around course selection, English language preparation, institution quality, and post-study opportunities can all shape future educational, professional, and migration outcomes.

That is why these decisions should be made carefully. Many of our consultations involve students and parents seeking clear, independent advice before committing significant time and money to overseas education.

Our perspective goes beyond standard admissions guidance. In addition to being a Qualified Education Agent Counsellor and Registered Migration Agent, Aviram brings three postgraduate qualifications, experience living and working across multiple countries, and a senior professional background. This broader academic, international, and executive perspective helps families assess education decisions not just in terms of admission, but in terms of long-term value, career relevance, and future opportunity.

We also work selectively. Our focus is on strong universities and serious students who want to excel, make thoughtful decisions, and approach international education with ambition and purpose.

This page provides an overview of how international study in Australia works and the key factors students and families should consider.

Student visa (Subclass 500)

The Subclass 500 visa allows international students to undertake full-time study in Australia at an approved education provider.

This visa applies across all education sectors, including:

  • English language programs
  • Vocational education and training (VET)
  • Bachelor degrees
  • Masters programs
  • Doctoral (PhD) programs
  • School education

Note: In most cases, the visa is granted for the duration of the course.

Student visa holders may work limited hours while studying. Importantly, family members of student visa holders may have broader work rights and in many cases can work full-time, depending on the level of study being undertaken by the primary applicant.

What are the various study pathways in Australia?

Australia offers a wide range of education pathways. The most suitable option depends on a student’s academic background, English proficiency, and long-term career objectives.

VET

VET

Vocational education provides practical, industry-focused training through Registered Training Organisations (RTOs). It prepares students for specific careers with qualifications like Certificates, Diplomas, and Advanced Diplomas.

These shorter, hands-on programs cover fields such as hospitality, construction, IT, childcare, and engineering, and often lead directly to employment in high-demand industries.

Bachelor degrees

Bachelor degrees

Bachelor programs are undergraduate university degrees typically lasting three to four years.

They provide foundational academic training and are required for many professional careers such as engineering, accounting, health sciences, and business.

Masters programs

Masters programs

Masters degrees are postgraduate qualifications designed for specialisation or career advancement.

Many international students pursue masters programs to deepen expertise in a specific field or to enhance global career opportunities.

Students under 18

Students under the age of 18 can study in Australia, particularly in secondary schools and certain English language programs, but additional legal and welfare requirements apply.

Australian immigration regulations require that appropriate accommodation, welfare, and guardianship arrangements are in place for minors while they are in the country.

These arrangements may include:

Living with a parent or legal guardian in Australia

Approved homestay accommodation arranged by the education provider

School-approved welfare and supervision arrangements

Education providers and visa authorities place strong emphasis on ensuring that international students under 18 are properly supported during their time in Australia.

Because of these additional requirements, applications involving minors often require careful planning and documentation

We assist families in understanding these requirements and ensuring that appropriate arrangements are in place before proceeding with a student visa application.
